Day 27

Outside the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. The title is because Wicked is playing there right now, even though there is absolutely no evidence in the photo that that is the case.

Day 11

Walking back from lunch, I discovered an abandoned shopping cart. I took a picture. Not my favorite, but I haven’t had any other good opportunities today.

Day 10

Even with the falling snow I couldn’t get a shot I really liked. I then went to my local hangout which had plenty of brightly colored things to shoot, but everything turned out blurry or icky, except for one (the one below). It was not the one I wanted to use after previewing the photos. I wanted to use the candid portrait of a friend, but I managed to focus on her forehead instead of her eyes. Doh.

Day 9

I stepped outside and looked up. These trees are all along my street. I really love living downtown. I could probably do the entire 365 days just walking up and down the street.

Can’t Look Away

This post is a bit overdue.  The last weekend in September was Octoberfest in Appleton.  It was clearly an opportunity to practice my people pictures, which I don’t attempt very often.  I tend to find that when I am photographing people, I get WAY better results when then don’t know I’m shooting them.  This may be why I don’t actually take many candid portraits as I feel a bit stalker-like and sneaky when I do it.

Well, 50 thousand people wandering the streets is more than an opportunity  to practice, so off I went.

I actually spent more time shooting the bands as they are performing and I would expect they would want to be captured on film and promoted.  Occasionally, I would scan the crowd with my 70-300mm lens and just randomly focus of people.  This shot was my most favorite of that practice.  After I took it, and realized what I had, I went looking for her to get her contact info so she could have a copy, but by then, she had disappeared.  Ah well.  I have a copy waiting for her.

Can't Look Away

Snow in April?

Yes, but this is Wisconsin, so I’m not really surprised.  It also rained in my kitchen today, but that’s another story.

This was going to be a wide shot, but I decided to square it off after seeing it in a thumbnail.

Watch Over Me

How to proceed with this shot?

Ignore the fact that the picture is crooked for a moment.  I’m having difficulty deciding on a crop for this photo.  I also don’t know if I prefer color or black and white.  I like them all!

By the way, I got guite a few nice shots (including this one) from the Heckrodt shoot.  I’m glad I waited a bit to look at them.  I feel like I can be more objective when I’ve sort of “forgot” about the pictures for a bit.  There will be more incoming.

The Tree

The Tree

I missed a opportunity to shoot some hoarfrost this morning.  I was able to get this capture though.  My parents live out in Wrightstown surrounded by dairy farms and corn fields.  This field is right across the street from their house.  I’m considering going back out there in the early morning, as my parents say it is very pretty around dawn.

On the other hand, I strongly dislike 6 a.m.

Oh yeah, I started a photoblog for my website.  Yay.
